Good hardware; software limits usability. August 27, 2010 mdingers (Seattle, WA) This remote has all the capabilities I was looking for, but the desktop software for this remote makes many of them inaccessible. For example:
1. If you try to make any changes that require more than about 3 minutes to setup, the software has logged out of your server, requiring the user to start over again. This is very frustrating when trying to set up "soft" buttons or other button mapping on the remote. The first axiom of software design: do not lose data/work! This is really galling and required me to set up each piece of hardware a few buttons at a time and as quickly as I could.
2. The Wizards are really more in the way than they are helpful. They actually limit the usefulness of the remote.
I've given this thing all I can and I'll be looking for a replacement. Since I assume the software, the remote's downfall, is common across the Logitech remotes, I'll be looking for something else. The device itself is excellent. The software is so poor it should be redesigned from the ground up.
An improvement over the Harmony 890. August 27, 2010 D. Dimick (Los Angeles, CA) I've been using Harmony remotes several years and purchased the 900 to replace my failing 890 (stuck buttons). This review will focus on the differences between the two remotes.
Ergonomically this remote feels better in the hand than the 890. The buttons are easier to find and press, and the textured back makes it less prone to slipping out of your hand or falling off the couch onto the floor.
Programming uses the same process and software. However, you must create a new account for this remote. I was unable to remove my 890 and then add the 900 on my existing account. I'm not sure why this is, but it's more of an annoyance than a problem as creating a new account is very easy.
The RF/IR transceiver does not require programming, so you no longer have to update two devices whenever you change anything. The included IR blasters work very well. I have closed cabinets with components on multiple shelves. One IR blaster is able to control all devices flawlessly. The headphone-style plugs used by the IR blasters are a different size than the 890's so you cannot simply swap the plugs and continue to use your existing emitters. You'll need to use the new ones, but as I said above they do work well.
I have seen other reviewers having problems with the range of the RF. I'm using this remote's RF capabilities to access components hidden inside a cabinet from about 12-20 feet away, depending on where I am, and it works great at this range.
The addition of red/green/yellow/blue hard keys is a definite plus. Previously if you needed to use these buttons you had to map them onto the Activity screen; they are in a much more convenient location now.
As other reviewers have pointed out, this thing is a fingerprint magnet, and not just on the touchscreen. The entire surface is glossy and fingerprints collect rapidly. Speaking of the screen, it's far better looking that the one on the 890.
The battery life isn't as good as the 890. I would use the 890 for a couple weeks before throwing it on the cradle, but the 900 is lasting about half that time. While I'm on the subject, another improvement is the charging interface between the cradle and the remote. With the 890 I had to jiggle it around and find just the right position before it would charge; the 900 has larger contacts and has been redesigned so this is no longer a problem.
Overall this remote is a nice evolution of the 890 concept.
Does not work August 24, 2010 Daniel 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It does not work if you are 8ft from Blaster. Hard do configure, software is to slow. Support takes to much time to answer and this remote loose configuration to frequently.
I will not buy any other universal remote with the support I've got from Logitech.
Works well August 23, 2010 Ned Bought this model even though I have the 880. Wanted to use the same software and just add the remote so I could use the second remote upstairs. Not so fast. I had to create a new account and add the remote. So much for just transferring my current settings and devices. Had to start from the beginning which takes time.
The other reason that I bought this remote was because I though it would be compatible with the 880 blaster - wrong. Had I known this before I would have just bought a second 880. The remote is nice and has about the same delay as the 880. The screen is nice and the battery lasts a long time in between charges. Also, Logitech fixed the charger problems that plagued the 880. I do wish there was a last channel button that you don't have to program. Over all, it's a good but expensive remote.
Do not buy the Harmony 900 August 22, 2010 Dan This item is terrible. The RF does not work and Logitech will not fix it. They claim it has a range of up to 100 feet, but mine does not work past 20 feet. I have disabled all wireless equipment in my home to rule out interference and my closet neighbor is 1/4 mile away so the only wireless in my house was the remote and it still could not consistently connect to the blaster from more than 20 feet away. What a terrible product! My Harmony 890 did not have this issue.
